The Russian Federation is the largest single nation land mass in the world, with a total area of 17,075,200 sq km, made up of 16,995,800 sq km of land and 79,400 sq km of water.
It has 20,241.5 km of land boundaries, 37,653 of coastline and 49 offshore islands of over 3000 sq km.
It spans 5,592 km from it's western border with Europe, to it's east coast on the -pacific-ocean-.
It spans nine time zones, from + 3 hours GMT in the west to + 12 hours GMT in the east.
It's highest geographical point is Gora El'Brus in the Caucasus Mountains, at 5,633m above sea level.
It's lowest geographical point is The Caspian Sea, at 28m below sea level.
It is home to the world's deepest fresh water lake, Lake Baikal, which is 1,618.488m deep.
It has 100,000 rivers, of which the longest is The Volga.
It has nine mountain ranges of which the Caucasus and The Urals are the largest.
It claims 10% of the world's arable land and has a wide natural resource base, including major deposits of timber, petroleum, natural gas, coal, ore, and minerals.
As the world's largest country, Russia can boast the world's largest railway network at 154,000 kilometres and the world's largest road network at 593,000 kilometres.

The country contains 23 UNESCO heritage sites, 40 UNESCO biosphere reserves, 40 national parks and 101 nature reserves, which are home to 266 mammal species and 780 bird species.
The country consists of mainly grass steppe to the south, heavy coniferous forestation to the north, with arctic tundra on it's north coast, to semi-desert at it's Black sea coast.
Because of it's size Russia's climate can vary from sub-tropical on it's Black sea coast, to sub- arctic conditions in the north.
It rarely has seasons, being either predominantly Summer time or Winter time, with only a matter of weeks occurring between the two.
Russia is politically made up of 58 regions, 20 republics, 9 territories, 1 autonomous region and two federal cities.
It's overall population is 146.3m, with a population density of 8.3 persons per sq km.

Russian is part of the Indo- European family of languages, of the East Slavic group.It is one of the six official languages of the U.N, and is spoken by 142.6m people in Russia.There are two other major languages spoken, Tatar, spoken by 5.3m and Ukranian spoken by 1.8m.The Russian language uses the Cyrillic alphabet.
